Art World is a limited edition book, published in 1999 by Fotofolio in New York.
The book includes 700 black and white portraits of artists, art critics, art curators, art dealers and art collectors taken over a 20 year period.
The images in this book are all in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Wayne Koestenbaum, Robert Pincus-Witten, and Mark Strand wrote essays for ArtWorld.
Art World includes over 425 artists, from the 1950’s abstract expressionists to late 1990’s emerging talents. Subjects include Willem & Elaine deKooning, Joop Sanders, Milton Resnick, Lee Krasner, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Chuck Close, Agnes Martin, Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel, Barbara Kruger, Peter Halley, Phillip Taaffe, Mike and Doug Starn, Annette Lemieux, Jenny Holzer, and Mimmo Paladino just to name a few.
The more than 100 art critics range from Clement Greenberg to Meyer Schapiro, Hilton Kramer, Rosalind Krauss, and Rene Ricard. An equal number of art dealers include Leo Castelli, Arne Glimcher, Larry Gagosian and Paula Cooper. Noted art collectors include Agnes Gund, Ronald & Jo Carole Lauder, Ed Cohen, Ray Learsy, and Emily & Jerry Spiegel.
Most of the 700 portraits were taken on Greenfield-Sanders antique 11×14 view camera.
